Firmware is the software that runs directly on your Trezor device and governs everything from transaction signing to the PIN entry screen. Keeping it up to date is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to maintain the security and functionality of your hardware wallet. Trezor’s development team releases firmware updates to patch newly discovered vulnerabilities, improve performance, and add support for new coins and features.

Why Firmware Updates Matter

  • Security patches. Cryptographic research and security audits occasionally surface vulnerabilities. Firmware updates address these issues before they can be exploited.
  • New coin and token support. Updated firmware enables Trezor to sign transactions for newly added cryptocurrencies and tokens.
  • Feature improvements. Updates may bring UI enhancements, improved transaction parsing, or new capabilities such as multi-sig support improvements.
  • Bug fixes. Edge-case bugs discovered after a release are resolved in subsequent firmware versions.
Always update firmware using Trezor Suite only. Never install firmware distributed through any third-party website, email link, or unofficial tool. Trezor Suite cryptographically verifies every firmware image before flashing it to your device.

Check Your Current Firmware Version

Before updating, confirm the firmware version currently installed on your device:
  1. Open Trezor Suite and connect your Trezor.
  2. Click your device name in the top-left corner of Suite.
  3. Select Settings → Device.
  4. Your current firmware version is displayed under Firmware. Compare it with the latest release shown in Suite—if an update is available, Suite will indicate this with an Update available badge.

Performing a Firmware Update

Have your recovery seed ready before you start. A firmware update erases the device storage as part of the flashing process. If anything goes wrong, you will need your recovery seed to restore your wallet. Do not proceed without your seed in hand.
1

Back up and verify your recovery seed

Locate your recovery seed (12 or 24 words) and confirm every word is legible and in the correct order. Do not continue until you are confident you can restore from this seed if needed.
2

Connect your Trezor and open Suite

Plug your Trezor into your computer using the USB cable and launch Trezor Suite. Make sure you are running the latest version of Suite itself—check Settings → Application for any pending Suite updates.
3

Navigate to firmware settings

Click your device name in the top-left corner, then go to Settings → Device. Under Firmware, click Update firmware.
4

Review the changelog

Trezor Suite displays the release notes for the new firmware version. Review what has changed, then click Install firmware to begin.
5

Confirm on your Trezor

Your Trezor’s screen will display the firmware fingerprint (a hash). Verify that this fingerprint matches the one shown in Trezor Suite. Press the right button on your device to approve the installation.
6

Wait for the update to complete

Do not disconnect your Trezor during the flashing process. The device will reboot automatically once the firmware has been installed successfully.
7

Reconnect and unlock

After the reboot, Trezor Suite will detect your device. Enter your PIN when prompted. Your wallet, accounts, and balances will be fully accessible—no data has been lost.

If the Update Fails

In rare cases a firmware update can stall or fail mid-process, leaving the device in bootloader mode. If this happens:
  1. Do not panic. Bootloader mode does not mean your funds are gone—your assets live on the blockchain, not on the device.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect your Trezor while holding the button(s) to re-enter bootloader mode manually if necessary.
  3. Open Trezor Suite—it will detect the device in bootloader mode and offer to retry the firmware installation.
  4. If Suite cannot complete the update, visit trezor.io/support for device-specific recovery instructions.
  5. If the device remains unresponsive, use your recovery seed to restore your wallet on a new or factory-reset Trezor device.
A failed update never puts your funds at risk. Your crypto is secured by your recovery seed, not by the device hardware itself. As long as your seed is safe, your assets are recoverable.
