# Fix a Trezor Device Not Recognized by Your Computer

> Troubleshoot Trezor hardware wallet connection issues when your computer fails to detect the device, covering cables, drivers, and OS settings.

When your computer does not recognize your Trezor, the cause is almost always one of a handful of common issues: a charge-only USB cable, a faulty port, a missing Trezor Bridge installation, or a permission setting on your operating system. Work through the steps below in order to identify and fix the problem quickly.

## Common Causes

* **Charge-only USB cable** — Many cables bundled with accessories carry power but no data signal.
* **Trezor Bridge not installed** — Browser-based access to Trezor Suite requires Bridge as a background service.
* **USB hub or extension** — Hubs introduce extra latency and power drops that can prevent enumeration.
* **Outdated firmware** — Very old firmware versions may not be recognized by current versions of Trezor Suite.
* **OS-level permissions** — Linux udev rules and macOS security prompts can silently block the device.

## Systematic Troubleshooting

<Steps>
  <Step title="Try a different USB cable">
    Swap your current cable for one you know carries data — for example, the cable that ships in the Trezor box. Charge-only cables have no data wires and will never work, regardless of any other settings. Plug the Trezor back in and wait five seconds for Trezor Suite to detect it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Try a different USB port">
    Disconnect from your current port and connect directly to a port on your computer's chassis. Avoid USB hubs, docking stations, and front-panel ports on desktop towers, which often share limited power budgets. If you only have USB-C ports, use a direct USB-A–to–C or USB-C–to–C cable rather than a multi-device hub.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Install or reinstall Trezor Bridge">
    Open [trezor.io/trezor-bridge](https://trezor.io/trezor-bridge) in your browser, download the installer for your operating system, and run it. If Bridge is already installed, uninstall it first through your system's application manager, restart your computer, then install the latest version. Trezor Bridge runs as a background service that lets browsers and other applications communicate with your device.

    <Note>
      Trezor Bridge is required whenever you access your wallet through a web browser. Trezor Suite desktop handles communication directly and does not need Bridge, but reinstalling Bridge can still resolve driver conflicts that affect the desktop app.
    </Note>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Restart Trezor Suite">
    Fully quit Trezor Suite — do not just close the window — then reopen it. On some systems the application holds a stale device handle after a USB reconnection. A fresh launch clears the handle and lets the device enumerate correctly.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check OS-level permissions">
    Your operating system may be blocking low-level USB access. Follow the platform-specific instructions in the section below for Windows, macOS, or Linux to verify and fix permission settings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Reinstall Trezor Suite">
    If none of the above steps work, download the latest version of Trezor Suite from [trezor.io/trezor-suite](https://trezor.io/trezor-suite), uninstall your current installation, and perform a clean install. Corrupt application files or a failed update can prevent proper device communication.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Platform-Specific Instructions

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Windows">
    **Check Device Manager**

    1. Press **Win + X** and select **Device Manager**.
    2. Look for an entry named **Trezor** under *Universal Serial Bus devices* or *Ports (COM & LPT)*. An entry with a yellow warning icon indicates a driver problem.
    3. Right-click the entry and choose **Update driver → Search automatically for drivers**.
    4. If no Trezor entry appears at all, check **Other devices** for an unknown device — this is often an unrecognized Trezor.

    **Reinstall Trezor Bridge as administrator**

    Right-click the Trezor Bridge installer and choose **Run as administrator**. Windows sometimes blocks driver installation for standard user accounts.

    **Disable USB selective suspend**

    1. Open **Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings**.
    2. Expand **USB settings → USB selective suspend setting** and set it to **Disabled**.
    3. Click **Apply**, then replug your Trezor.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="macOS">
    **Allow the accessory (macOS 13 Ventura and later)**

    When you first plug in a Trezor on Ventura or later, macOS shows an **Allow Accessory to Connect** prompt. If you dismissed that prompt, go to **System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessories** and enable access for Trezor Suite.

    **Reset USB subsystem**

    Open **Terminal** and run:

    ```bash theme={null}
    sudo killall -STOP -c usbd
    ```

    Then unplug and replug your Trezor. This forces macOS to re-enumerate all USB devices.

    **Check System Information**

    Go to **Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → USB**. If your Trezor appears in the USB device tree, the hardware connection is fine and the issue is software. If it does not appear at all, try a different cable or port.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Linux">
    **Add udev rules**

    Without the correct udev rules, Linux will not grant your user account permission to open the Trezor USB device. Run the following commands to install the official rules:

    ```bash theme={null}
    # Download and install Trezor udev rules
    sudo curl -L https://data.trezor.io/udev/51-trezor.rules -o /etc/udev/rules.d/51-trezor.rules
    sudo udevadm control --reload-rules
    sudo udevadm trigger
    ```

    After running these commands, unplug and replug your Trezor.

    **Add your user to the plugdev group**

    ```bash theme={null}
    sudo usermod -aG plugdev $USER
    ```

    Log out and back in for the group change to take effect.

    **Verify device detection**

    Run `lsusb` with your Trezor connected. You should see a line containing **Trezor** or the vendor ID `1209`. If it appears, the kernel sees the device and the problem is permission-related. If it does not appear, try a different cable or port.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Still Not Working?

If your Trezor is still not recognized after completing all steps above, visit the official support portal at [trezor.io/support](https://trezor.io/support) to submit a support ticket. Include your operating system version, Trezor Suite version, and a description of any error messages or indicators on the device display to help the support team diagnose the issue faster.
